Shimit Amin’s second venture Chak De India has been under controversy ever since it was started. First it was reported that Shah Rukh Khan was not happy with the director’s retakes and walked out of the sets. Then it was said that Aditya Chopra was upset with his director for using 1,500 cans of raw stock for filming.
But Shimit brushes aside all rumours and says, "Who said Shah Rukh walked out of my sets? Shah Rukh is incredibly professional. Make him sit in a bucket of ice and he will do it for his role. He was the first person who was very keen on this film since he wanted to work in a sports venture."
The film also stars a host of newcomers. Ask Shimit about the casting and he says, "It was the most difficult part of the film. Jaideep had written a great script and Shah Rukh was cast without any doubts, but we had to form an entire girls’ hockey team. We needed girls who could play as well as act. We went all over the country looking for these girls." He adds, "Once we found them, they had to undergo rigorous training that included waking up at 4.30 am and going for practices, they also had to follow a certain diet. We had a consultant from abroad to train them physically. All these factors put together made it a difficult task." Finally, it was also said that the film is based on ace hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi’s life. Shimit does not agree and says, "The film was based on a news item that appeared in a daily and Jaideep was haunted by it. He then started research on the subject." He adds, "When Negi came to know that we are doing a film, he came to help us and mentioned that his life story is very similar to Chak De... He offered us first hand experiences and gave an insight into the physical condition of the players, the pressure of the game, the locker room stress and the love for the game. Dhanraj Pillai also pitched in to help us. |
