After attending a retrospective of her films held in Los Angeles, Deepti Naval is back in India for the release of her film Rivaaz, that is directed by Ashok Kumar Nanda. "This film’s story was shocking. When I was in Vancouver someone told me about these practices but I said such things do not exist in India. When I came back and this director met me and narrated the script, I was stunned beyond words. I saw all the research work and couldn’t believe that such issues are rampant in India. We are basically a conservative society. How can we have a religion where mothers, daughters or sisters are forced into prostitution? The men do not work and live off her earnings. This subject is going to raise many questions. It has to be thought about with a lot of seriousness", says Deepti.
This is not the first time that Deepti has performed a role which is based on prostitution. "Yes I did films like Bawander and Kamla. But Rivaaz is a tradition where the girl of the house is sold when she turns 18. I love doing films that create awareness and educate people. They are not entertaining films, but as an actor I feel it is my responsibility to create some kind of awareness. I don’t think of money when I do such films. I am also doing another film which is based on the Devdasi system, titled Kaaran."
After a long spell in Bollywood the actress is now turning to direction. "It’s still in the scripting stages. The film is based on intimate relationships. I plan to launch it hopefully by the end of the year. I am looking out for a mature actress like Madhuri. I haven’t approached her as yet but I want her kind of personality" she says.
When asked about her next project with Sai Paranjapye, Deepti says, "Yes, I am doing her film. I have not heard the script as yet or rather I don’t need to. I’ll go blindfolded on her sets. We haven’t started work on it yet. I am eagerly waiting to work with her again." |
