actress upskirtJuhi Chawla feels that there has been a strange connection with the South Indian characters that she has played so far. “I am sure I must have been a South Indian in one of my previous lives,” she laughs. Juhi adds, “The first time I played a South Indian was in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. It is now Ganesh Acharya’s Swami that will portray me as South Indian for the second time. But the character that I portray in Acharya’s film is completely different from Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke that had me as a South Indian who was vulnerable yet modern. Vyjayanti Iyer, my character in Hum Hain Rahi... dresses up in skirts, dresses and salwaar kameez. But, in Swami, I am the typical conservative South Indian who wears only saris.”

Talking about saris, Juhi says, “When I saw the saris I had to wear for the film, I thought they were very expensive but I was surprised, that they were priced between Rs 250 and 350. I was so happy wearing what the typical middle class women usually wear in their homes. I also wore some South Indian jewellery and also put flowers in my hair.” She adds, “I wore the typical South Indian nose rings. I agreed to apply kaajal too for the authentic look which I have never done so far for any film.” “What’s more,” Juhi continues, “I asked Ganesh if I could also speak my dialogues with a heavy accent. But then I realised that Manoj (Bajpai) and I play a couple who have lived in Lonavla since many years so the heavy accent was not required. Of course the word ‘Aiyoo’, a typical phrase used by the South Indians has been interspersed in our dialogues. But believe me whenever I play a South Indian, I don’t feel that I am playing a character, it comes to me naturally.” Juhi says that it was Ganesh’s script that moved her so much that she agreed to it instantly. “I broke down after Ganesh narrated the story to me. I could not control myself.”  Juhi enjoyed playing a simple village woman married to Swami. “There is some innocence in her. Manoj and I are simple people with small dreams. He achieves his dreams but loses me in turn,” she concludes.”
