Hollywood director Willard Caroll is all set to make his debut in Hindi films with the Salman Khan and Ali Larter starrer Marigold. Here the director talks about his first venture and the experience of working in a Hindi film even though he was not familiar with the Hindi language.
Compared to Hollywood, how was the experience making a Hindi film?
Great. Except for me and some of my actors from the West, the entire crew of Marigold was Indian including the technicians and I had a wonderful time working with them. I observed that it is not only Indian actors but also the technical team that is extremely talented. I also had a great time discovering the country while shooting for it.
The pace at which most Indian films work is very lethargic. Did you experience that at any given point of time?
Fortunately no (laughs). I completed the shooting of my film in 41 days and there was not a day when the shooting was cancelled or held up. Also, the film is hitting the theatres just the way I had planned.
Then why did the film take so long to release?
I wanted it to have a worldwide release simultaneously. We had to crack deals with various theatre exhibitors all over the globe especially from the US, the UK, European Union and the UAE, and that took time.
How was your first encounter with Salman Khan?
I met Salman for the first time at his Bandra residence. I told him that I would not take more then 20 minutes of his time. I gave him a brief about my film and how I planned to shoot it here which would actually begin after 18 months. And Salman and I hit it off quite well. He has got a great sense of humour. In fact the first film that I saw starred Salman in the lead. I was in Chennai when I happened to watch Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and I feel that he is the most romantic star of Hindi cinema. He was my first choice.
Was Ali Larter your first choice too?
Yes. I remember handing over the script to her at the airport. She was on her way to New York and said that she’d go through the script while on the flight. As soon as she reached New York she called and said, "William I am doing your film." Her instant yes came as a surprise to me. It was only later I learnt why. You see, in the flight, the passenger sitting next to Ali was an Indian, and she just happened to tell him about the script and how it was going to star Salman in the lead. The Indian just could not stop raving about Salman and said that he was the biggest Bollywood star. Ali then did not even feel the need to read the script. She just said yes.
