Anjan Dutt made his debut as a director with the Shabana Azmi and Marc Robinson starrer Bada Din. He then directed Bow Barracks Forever, an English film. “But I would say that it is the The Bong Connection which casts Shayan Munshi, Raima Sen and Parambrata Chatterjee, as my first experiment with directing an English language feature film out of the country,” says Anjan. Being a Bengali, Anjan’s main aim has always been the correct projection of Bengalis in his film. “The Bong Connection is about the new generation of Bengalis all over the world. Through the stories of young men who have contradicting views about Kolkata, we capture the changing face of Bengalis and Bengal. It will be the first crossover film from Kolkata. Significant parts of the film are shot in Kolkata and Houston in the US, where a sizeable Bengali population lives.”
The director adds, “The film’s producer, Joy Brata Ganguly had come up with the theme on the basis of which I developed the script. He has stayed in the US and seen the Bengali community there. When he came back, he wanted to make a movie like Monsoon Wedding and Bend It Like Beckham. This film will give me the opportunity to change the common perception of my movies, that they are ‘intellectual’.” The Bong Connection would have been the first film to feature sisters Raima and Riya together till Riya had to be replaced. Anjan confirms, “Riya and Raima were to do the film initially, but Riya had to back out due to date hassles and so Peeya took over her role.” |
