Director Anjan Dutt gave a live musical performance at a Mumbai restaurant last week. The Bong Connection filmmaker considers himself to be a music director and not a film director. "Though I made my debut as a director with the Hindi film Bada Din, I would like to believe that I am a music composer." He continues, "In fact, in Kolkata I am known as a music director." Anjan has cut nine albums as a music director in Kolkata. So when was the first time he realised his inclination towards music? "I completed my schooling in Darjeeling and it was during those years that I learnt to play the guitar. After a hard day’s work when we retired to our rooms in the hostel, I would invariably land up playing the guitar while my roommates would sing songs. I lived in Kolkata which takes pride in its Anglo-Indian culture and music is an important part of it."
Anjan soon began penning down songs in Bengali. "My friends and I had even formed a rock group and we used to sing songs at night clubs. It is then that I signed a contract with HMV and cut my first album." Anjan, however, has no plans to make a Bengali film as of now. "I want to continue to be known as a Hindi film director here. Bollywood is all over India and fortunately there is place for sensitive filmmakers like me. I think directors are enjoying the most wonderful phase in Bollywood. |
