Ruslaan Mumtaz, the son of veteran actress Anjana Mumtaz, is all set to make his debut in Robby’s Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar also called MP3. This young actor had given himself two years with choreographer and dance teacher Shiamak Davar but a film was offered to him within the first six months of his association with Shiamak. “I just could not believe my luck. Robby approached me with MP3 barely six months after joining Shiamak’s dance group. Honestly I thought I would not be offered a film till at least two years. But that did not happen in my case. Guess somebody up there loves me,” says Ruslaan smiling.
Soon arrived the day when Ruslaan had to face the camera. “The first day of the shooting went smoothly. It was the second day that proved to be so bad that I had to sit at home for one month.” Just when you are about to smell a controversial story Ruslaan says, “It is just that I met with an accident. The scene required me to jump while riding a bicycle. I was doing just that when the front wheel of the cycle snapped suddenly throwing me off gear. I fell flat on my face. It took a good one month for my injury to heal. That’s the reason why I had to stay at home.”
Ruslaan says that he had watched Robby’s Samay earlier. “I was charmed by the Laila Laila number. I liked the film.” Ruslaan credits Robby immensely for the subtle performance that he has dished out in MP3. He explains, “I am an actor who has a theatre background. I have done several plays as an amateur. Actors who have done theatre tend to be aggressive in their expressions and emotions. I did something similar while facing the camera for MP3 too.”
About Robby he says, “It was Robby who pointed out that he did not want me to be so melodramatic. He made me underplay my character, Rohan, and now when I watch it I realise that it has gelled in so well with the story of the film. Robby has been a good teacher.” Ask him if MP3 is the usual, run-of-the-mill love story and Ruslaan says, “For the first time you see a character narrate his own story, which is not the case with romantic films that have been made so far.”
He adds, “It is not a typical love story that you have witnessed umpteen number of times where the viewer can easily predict what the hero is going to do next. Expect the unexpected, that’s the only thing I can say.” Ruslaan declares that he is single, so all those rumours linking him to model Niharika Singh are not true. “Cliched as it may sound but Niharika and I are good friends. I don’t want to say anything more than that,” he concludes.
