Manoj Bajpai still cannot forget the day when he had almost turned down Swami. He says, "I had gone to Ganesh Acharya’s office for the script narration of Swami. I instantly agreed to do the film but I remembered that someone had told me not to agree to do any film because it was the month of shraadh. The person had told me that anything auspicious or of my liking is not to be done during this period. I am superstitious where such issues are concerned and so I had almost turned down the film because of this."
The actor adds, "Ganesh gave me a very confused look that seemed to say, ‘Here is an actor who likes the story and still does not accept the role.’ I told Ganesh that I would let him know in 10 days time whether I wanted to do the film or not. Poor Ganesh, he seemed perplexed for a minute while I strolled out of his office."
Manoj continued saying, "You should have seen the expression on Ganesh’s face when I honestly confided in him about my dilemma and superstitious nature. I had almost turned down the most wonderful role that an actor could have only dreamt of. But I gave him a positive reply after 10 days. But now, I have decided that I will never let superstitious thoughts bother me.
Another embarrassment for him was when he confused Ganesh to be some Ramesh Acharya eager to cast him in the film. "I was at the Delhi airport when Ganesh had called about Swami. Since I was at the airport, there was a lot of noise around me and I could not hear him clearly. I told him to handover the script to my secretary. I didn’t know that it was choreographer Ganesh who has called me and not some Ramesh Acharya. Imagine my expression when my secretary informs me that was not Ramesh but Ganesh Acharya!" |
