Filmmaker Santosh Sivan, whose first Hollywood film Before the Rains will be screened at the Toronto fest in September, has now been signed up by the BBC for a movie on Afghanistan.
Sivan will direct the film Wedding Party, penned by an Italian writer. "The script is being readied and several rounds of discussions with the BBC have taken place. Due to problems in Afghanistan, insurance companies are unwilling to insure it there. Hence the film will be shot in Morocco or Ladakh," Sivan said.
"The film tells the tale of how the whites and the Russians arrive in Afghanistan and traces a 100-year history. The cast is being finalised," said the ace cameraman-turned-director.
Sivan’s Before the Rains was shot in the picturesque Munnar hill station in Idukki district of Kerala and focuses on the dilemma of people who straddle two worlds. It will be screened at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.
On the technical aspects of making films using digital technology, he said it had its advantages and disadvantages.
"Certainly using the (raw) film is more realistic, while digital technology can be manipulated. It all depends on who wants what, when it comes to making decisions," said Sivan.
On the prospects of Kerala becoming a destination for shooting, he said: "Sound is a major problem here and also poor support facilities. If these issues are addressed, there is no doubt that Kerala could turn out to be one of the most sought after shooting destinations."
