Cast: Shobana, Irrfan Khan, Rajat Kapoor, Dhruv Panjnani Director: Kaushik Roy Rating: **
A fine cast, a topical subject, but Apna Aasmaan appeals neither to the heart nor to the intellect. The lives of Ravi (Irrfan Khan) and Padmini (Shobana) have been consumed by the needs of their autistic son Buddiraj (Dhruv Panjnani). He has found escape in bitterness and booze, while she has given up her own ambitions to be a mathematician and dancer, to look after the boy.
A mysterious Dr Satya (Anupam Kher), splashed all over the media with his "cosmic allopathy" and his genius-making brain booster attracts the attention of the hapless parents. Their doctor (Rajat Kapoor) warns them against turning their son into a guinea pig, but one night in a drunken rage, Ravi injects Buddhi with the drug. Though the teenager wakes up a mathematical genius, he also turns into an unpleasant arrogant person, who refuses to recognise his parents. Now the two want their old Buddhi back, but Dr Satya has gone underground.
There was rich material for both social comment and satire here — overambitious parents turning their kids into monsters, quacks selling miracle cures — but director Roy’s stolid handling makes the film quite unwatchable, despite fairly competent performances. There are many scenes that add nothing to the film —if Ravi works in the plastics industry, does he have to spout pro-plastic lines all the time? Do the characters have to give their home a make-over just to allow a paint company to get a plug?
Think Little Miss Sunshine, and see what an opportunity was lost due to unimaginative writing and direction. |
