It’s a problem right out of contemporary urban life — a relationship going through stress due to career pressures. Unfortunately, director Mohit Hussein ruins Kaisay Kahein with his cardboard characters and TV soap opera treatment. Set in London, the romance between banker Aditya (Rajveer Dutt) and TV journalist Radhika starts off warmly. They fall in love and without any extra drama move in together. Strange that for two years they are together, there are no problems, but the minute he proposes marriage, all hell breaks lose.
Radhika gets a promotion to Mumbai (from London to Mumbai seems like a demotion), the possibility of separation does not bother her as much as the fact that he did not stop her. Ego hassles —hers mostly — get in the way and they break up. Their friends (Kunal Kumar-Chavi Mittal) are subjected to minute details of their togetherness and separation — an overused and lazy device to get the characters’ feelings across to the audience. Aditya has a hilarious encounter with his boss Neha (Aditi Govitrikar), who comes across as lonely, bitchy and insecure — the result of ambition, the director seems to say. He obviously hasn’t looked around lately to see any number of people combining career growth with a satisfying personal life.
Despite its pretensions to modernity, the film has an old-fashioned heart; Radhika’s mother, for instance, cites Sita as a feminine model to emulate. The busy careerwomen are repeatedly seen doing the housework, with no help from their husbands — which could be a believable bone of contention between a working couple. Hussein can’t bring to proper closure the problems he creates for his characters and the film moves to an abrupt and unsatisfactory end. The two new actors have ill-sketched parts, but perform reasonably well for their first film. Pity Hussein blew his chance to make a plausible film about present-day relationships, but at least the effort can be lauded. |
