The Train
Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Geeta Basra, Sayali Bhagat and others Director: Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala Rating: HH
Pick a Hollywood film, get someone to ‘adapt’ it, set it in a foreign country —this is also a tired formula now, used a lot by the Bhatts.Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala, who earlier did The Killer a ‘version’ of Collateral set in Dubai, now lift Derailed and place it in Bangkok, where everybody is Indian. Poor Emraan Hashmi is given the responsibility of shouldering the burden of this film, but without an Irrfan Khan to play against, he looks disinterested — despite getting two leading ladies to kiss.
He plays Vishal, an ad agency man having trouble on the professional and the personal front. His daughter is ill and awaiting an operation, his over-made-up, mini-skirted wife (Sayali Bhagat — sad debut) is disgruntled, and his boss breathing down his neck.
The situation is ripe for an extra-marital affair and another over made-up, mini-skirted woman with problems of her own is interested. He meets Roma (Geeta Basra — no improvement) on the train to work and after some heart-to-heart chats they find themselves steaming up a hotel room. A mugger (Aseem Merchant) walks in, robs Vishal, rapes Roma, and then starts blackmailing him. They obviously can’t go to the cops, and when Vishal asks a friend to help, the villain shoots him dead. That brings a cop (Rajat Bedi) after him, a dude who acts like a bad actor in a B-grade Hindi film.
When Vishal is forced to give the money saved for his daughter’s operation to the blackmailer, he is desperate and gets a clue that enables him to turn the tables on the villain. Seen backward, Vishal’s reluctance to go to the cops can’t be explained, more so since his friend is killed. Later, the officer, who was so doggedly investigating the murder also obliging vanishes. Except for Mithoon’s music, there is little one can praise in this film. Looks like the Bhatt style of filmmaking works only for them. |
