odhaa Akbar is an epic film on every scale, from its cast, its director, its costumes and of course the incredible battle and action scenes in the film. The cast, including stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had to go through intensive training to prepare to portray their roles. They not only had to learn sword fighting but also riding horses and in Hrithik’s case fighting an elephant. If that was not enough they had to make it look like it was natural. The man in charge of the action sequences was stunt director Ravi Dewan and he recently talked about the massive undertaking that was Jodhaa Akbar.

Dewan said, “I was training about 15 to 17 actors in Jodhaa Akbar for these fight sequences. I had to teach Hrithik, Ash, Sonu Sood and the main villain Nikitin Dheer both horse riding and sword-fighting. And each of these action sequences took about a month and a half to complete. Firstly I had to train them in horse riding for which we had to book the Mahalaxmi Race Course for about a month. It was a lot of effort but in the end I am sure it will be worth it.”

Then he had to train them for the sword fighting sequences, “The training for sword-fighting took place at Mehboob studios and we shot for about 45 days at a stretch. Both actors were very professional about learning sword-fighting.” One particular scene shows the shows Jodhaa and Akbar sword fighting each other, “There is a fight scene between Hrithik and Aishwarya. But that was a romantic, masti fight, where they tease each other. That has come out really well.”

About working with Hrithik for the first time Dewan said, “Yes, after being around for so many years I worked with Hrithik for the first time. I have worked with the best of the lot right from Raj Kumar to all the Khans. And let me tell you that training Hrithik wasn’t too much of a labour for me. He never threw any tantrums and the same was with Aishwarya as well.”

Dewan said that in preparation for the filming they had a storyboard for each scene and then, “Me and my assistant rehearsed every fight first. Then after preparing everything on the sets we shot the entire sequence on location. After which we sat down and edited those shots and included only those that were necessary. And we worked in tandem with the costume designer, art director and everyone else on the sets of the film. Everything on the sets was detailed.”

For the scene with Hrithik fighting an elephant, it took director Ashutosh Gowariker a lot of convincing to get Dewan to agree to do the scene. Dewan explains, “The most difficult stunt was taming the elephants. When Ashutosh told me about this particular scene, I refused immediately. Elephants are very difficult to tame. In the scene, the elephant is supposed to be wild and angry, and Hrithik has to tame it and finally, sit on it. Hrithik would feed the elephant bananas and jaggery before and after the shoot.” He also called the elephant Sweety.

Dewan revealed that for the climatic massive battle scene, “I took 250 stuntmen to Karjat and Rajashthan. Plus, we had 5,000 villagers. The battle sequences were quite big, and it took a lot of time. We would start preparing for the scene at 3am every morning, and would be ready for the first shot only by 7am.” The shoot for that scene alone took 20 to 30 days and though massive, there was a lot of standing around for the 5,000 villagers since the main fight is between… well I won’t give that away you will find out in a week!

As you probably know Jodhaa Akbar releases on February 15th and we will have many more stories leading up to the films premiere so be sure to check back here every day!

Abhishek Bachchan who turns 32 on Feb 5 has much to look forward to. 2008 is a significant year for him. He starts the year with Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘family saga’ Sarkar Raj , goes on to the f-x caper Drona and ends with the mellow Dilli 6. At home there’s much happiness as wife Aishwarya’s career too balances itself out neatly with her domestic responsibilities.

How does it feel to be 32?
Thank you for reminding me. I don’t get bogged down by age. I’m just happy to be where I am.

So tell me, where have you been hiding yourself?
Nowhere! Just been shooting out of Mumbai in the freezing winter of Jaipur for my friend Rakeysh Mehra’s Dilli 6. But the warmth of our unit just makes you forget the weather conditions. I’m lucky to be working with friends constantly.

But why have you been lying low?
It isn’t a conscious decision. Unfortunately, such is the nature of our career that we interact with the media only at an event or when a release is around the corner. Otherwise, we tend to get caught up in shootings. I’ve been traveling extensively during the past few months and had no time for anything but work and immediate family.

2008 is professionally special for both you and Aishwarya…
Yes, she has Jodhaa-Akbar coming up. I’ve seen the film’s trailer and heard the music. I love it! It’s so wonderful to hear such sublime sounds. And I’m not saying this because my wife is in it or because a very dear friend of mine Duggu (Hrithik) co-stars with her. I do hope for their sake that Jodhaa-Akbar does well.

Aishwarya looks like a true royal princess in Jodhaa-Akbar.
Most definitely! I married her. And I think she’s the most beautiful woman on earth.

Do you and Aishwarya discuss one another’s work?
Oh, yes. Most definitely I’m always very keen to know her reactions to my assignments and projects. She has very keen insight. She’s a wonderful sounding-board.

Does she take your advice on what roles to do?
Oh most certainly. When she was in two minds about doing Pink Panther because my grandmother was ailing and this film required her to be out of the country for two months, I encouraged her to do the film. It was a wonderful opportunity for her to work with some great actors. I take Aishwarya’s advice just as I take my parents’ advice. They’re some great actors in the house and I do seek their advice.

Are there lots of film discussions at home?
We’re very good at leaving our work behind. After a point we don’t discuss work at all. We like to keep aside our work and just talk about other things.

You also figured in Taare Zameen Par…
Yes, in the list of dyslexic people, I got a very nice mention from Aamir. He had approached me when I was shooting for Guru asking if I could be part of the film. I happen to be a spokesperson for dyslexia. When Aamir explained what kind of a film he was making I was very happy to lend my support in every way. Aamir has handled the subject very well.

If you were a dyslexic child, carrying loads of expectations not only from close ones but also from the entire world, how would you feel? How would you react to the constant comparison being made between you and your super successful father? Traumatic, right! But Abhishek Bachchan faced it all admirably and yet, managed to carve a niche for himself in Bollywood.

 Abhishek Bachchan

When a lean and bearded Abhishek Bachchan appeared on the Silver Screen for the first time in ‘Refugee’, everyone turned speculative. Would he succeed like his parents, the extraordinary Amitabh Bachchan and the hugely talented Jaya Bachchan or turn out to be a failure like several other star sons? Most of the critics had started on a negative note for him. They were quick to point out the numerous flaws in his acting. Some felt he had his father’s built minus the magnetism. Some said he had his mother’s beautiful eyes but they were expressionless. He was considered a weak successor of a highly talented family.

Perhaps the following beautiful lines penned by his legendary grandfather Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan were in his mind, as he coped up with a series of flops and disappointments.

“Lehron se dar kar nauka paar nahin hoti, koshish karne walon ki haar nahin hoti.” (If you are afraid of the waves, your boat will not touch the shore. Those who try are never defeated).

He tried and finally turned from an unsure and hesitant youth into a very desirable Prince Charming. After 14 flops and four years of career, Abhishek created ‘Dhoom’ on Bollywood. This Yash Chopra film ended his much touted jinx. He was appreciated in ‘Yuva’ and then came ‘Sarkar’, in which he was lauded for his intense acting, followed by a hi-spirited superhit comedy ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. Nobody had any clue at that time that the trio: Amitabh, Aishwarya and Abhishek, dancing to the tunes of ‘Kajra Re’ in the comedy are destined to be a family.

Although his film “Umrao Jaan” failed to do well at the box office, it became a boon for his personal life as he started courting the extraordinarily beautiful Aishwarya Rai in the course of the film. Earlier he was engaged to actress Karisma Kapoor. The couple had announced their engagement on Amitabh Bachchan`s 60th birthday celebration in 2002. But the engagement was called off in early 2003, which deeply affected Abhishek.

But now, his life was taking a fairy tale turn. This Prince Charming of Bollywood was courting a Beauty Queen. Added to it, success came in the form of ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘Dhoom 2’ and ‘Guru’.

In a dream wedding, Abhishek married Aishwarya on April 20, 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the South Indian Bunt community, to which his wife belongs. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai. Though the wedding was a private affair intended for the Bachchan and Rai family and friends, the frenzied involvement of the media turned it into a national celebration.

The fairy tale story of Junior Bachchan, as he is fondly called by the media, is still going on. He is endorsing many leading brands like Idea, Ford Motors, LG Appliances and Motorola in India. He has several big releases lined up for this year. Now, critics laud him as one of the finest star in the making…

The charming Jr B

Abhishek Bachchan is one of the most loved stars of Bollywood. Not only commoners but celebrities also swear by his endearing ways and perfect manners. Here are some of the beautiful things which the celebrities have to say about Jr Bachchan.

Amitabh Bachchan

It’s not easy to be subjected to humiliation and ridicule and still have the temerity to fight back. But he did it on his own.

Jaya Bachchan

Abhishek is a fabulous son, but like every other child, there have been a few exasperating moments. Abhishek has a lot of both his parents but yes, people who are close, know him to be loving and friendly like me. But he certainly has his father`s dry sense of humour. I think it`s quite a combination.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

I am enjoying every aspect of being married. I would love to spend every minute of the day with Abhishek.

Rani Mukherji

The thing about me and Abhishek is that we are such close pals that our chemistry works on the big screen. That’s why after Bunty Aur Babli, Karan Johar has signed us both in a film together.

Esha Deol

Abhishek is a lovely lovely boy.

Ajay Devgan

I don’t hang out with a lot of people. I hardly party. But if I confide, there are very few people… there’s Abhishek, Sanju, Suniel Shetty. We might speak to one another once a week or so, but we know we are there for each other.

Hrithik Roshan

I love the fact that I face healthy competition from actors like Abhishek Bachchan because it forces me to do well. I believe in doing my best - to fit into different roles and bring out the human side of every character.

Preity Zinta

He is one of the most cultured and funniest persons I have met. He’s delightful to work with!

Priyanka Chopra

Abhishek is a fantastic actor. He knows exactly what to do and how the film will turn out. When he was acting I realised how intelligent he is as an actor.

Ram Gopal Varma

I knew there was an incredible dignity and the hero in him. When I finally worked with him, the novelty struck me.

I think Abhishek is a very, very different actor from his father. He is extremely perceptive. His understanding of life is more contemporary than mine or Mr Bachchan`s.

Ashutosh+GowarikerWe enter his office in Khar, and are treated to a series of hardbound books that have a plethora of movie information and experiences between their impressive covers.

“I like collecting books on films. They make for interesting reading. But that’s about it,” he tells us, picking up the telephone and ordering his regular chai, in shuddh Marathi.

The man is intrigued by India, or so it seems, what with films like Lagaan , Swades and now the much celebrated romance of Jodhaa Akbar forming his spectrum of victories. Is he consciously that Indian by heart. “I think the patriotism comes to each of us naturally. I find Lagaan patriotic, while Swades was nationalistic. And now Jodhaa Akbar belongs to another genre of Indianness altogether.”

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai were the most obvious choices to play the title roles, we are informed. “The lead actors were chosen largely because of their physical persona combined by acting talent. Akbar was a warrior. I needed someone with the physique; also I needed an actor who would look regal without trying hard. Hrithik is a tremendous actor and can adapt himself physically to a character very well. This I noticed in Koi Mil Gaya , while I was impressed with Aishwarya in Chokher Bali , where she was bereft of any external embellishments,” explains Ashutosh.

What about problems between his the lead pair? “There was no problem between Ash and Hrithik. Once Ash returned to shoot, it was as normal as it had always been. Both my actors were very professional.”

So what next after Jodhaa Akbar ? “There’s nothing so far. I haven’t had the chance to think beyond Jodhaa Akbar,” said Ashutosh, sipping his last sip of chai, and setting the cup back where it belonged.

Ben Kingsley announcement of casting Aishwarya Rai in his forthcoming project on Taj Mahal has come as a surprise to many who thought that Aishwarya’s stint as a Hollywood actress was over after the debacle of The Last Legion.

Likewise, Kingsley begs to differ as he says, “She very generously agreed to do the movie with me. She suits the role perfectly.”

The script of the film is being readied as of now as Ben says, “My production house is working with a screenwriter on the project. I have very clear ideas about how I want to approach the subject.”

It’s an open secret that John Abraham is very keen to be cast opposite Aishwarya Rai. He believes they’d make a very handsome screen pair.

And when their first celluloid coupling in Sriram Raghavan’s Happy Birthday fell apart, John was bitterly disappointed to lose out on an eminently viable co-star.

Things worked out pretty smoothly after the Birthday fiasco. Director Sriram who has just released a fascinating noire film Johnny Gaddaar was quickly convinced by John to launch another project with Ash.

This is an intense love story for Abhishek’s childhood buddy producer Rohan Sippy to commence shooting in November.

However Aishwarya currently shooting in Boston for Pink Panther 2 has serious second thoughts.

Says a source, “Ash opted out of Karan Johar’s film because she didn’t want to play a woman who has a multiplicity of men in her life. Now in Sriram’s film she’d rather not do an intense romance with John.

After marriage Aishwarya’s personal and professional priorities have changed completely. She was always conscious of her image. Now she’ll do nothing that would even remotely compromise her position as the Bachchan Bahu.”

Producer Rohan Sippy remains convinced Ash is the right choice for Sriram’s film.

He flies to the US this week and then to Boston for an emergency meeting with Aishwarya, hoping to convince her of the project’s urgent need of her presence.

Says the film’s director Sriram Raghavan, “The project is an untitled love story which I need to go into right away in the first week of November. John’s dates are in place. He can’t give us dates after January 2008. Ash is shooting in Boston.

And Rohan is flying to meet her. Hopefully things will be in place once he returns. Ramu showed me a promo of Sarkar Raj. Ash’s performance just blew my mind. I really want to work with her.”

Until the producer’s return, everyone on the project has fingers crossed.
